Nominations close for CBE byelection

Five candidates want to fill a vacant trustee position onthe Calgary Board of Education.

Voters in wards 11 and 13 will go to the polls on Monday April 13thto vote for trustee.

The byelection is being held to fill a spot vacated by former trustee Sheila Taylor. She resigned last year to run as a Wildrose Party candidate in a provincial byelection in the constituency of Calgary West.

The candidates for the CBE are: Julie Hrdlicka, Karen Lloyd, Sean McAsey, Victoria Morgan and Wilf Phillips.

Byelections are known for notoriously low turnouts. In 2003, a CBE byelection in wards 12 and 14 drew just three per cent of eligible voters.

There are concerns this vote could be overshadowed by another election campaign a possible Alberta provincial vote which may soon be called forlate April.

Several of the byelection candidates for trustee say they'll do what they can to help voters deal with any confusion.

The list of candidates will be finalized on Tuesday.

The city estimates the byelection will cost between $150,000 and$170,000. There are approximately 66,000 eligible voters in wards 11 and 13.

Three of the candidates have indicated they will participate in a public forum on March 31. Victoria Morgan, Karen Lloyd and Julie Hrdlicka will take part in the forum to be held at Chinook Park School.
