Woman hit in Centre Street crosswalk dies, marking third such death in 2 years

A 66-year-old woman has died in hospital after she was hit in a crosswalk by a senior driver on Centre Street on Monday evening.

Awomanhas died in hospital after she was hit in a crosswalk by a 71-year-old driver on Centre Street on Monday evening.

Emergency crewswerecalled to the 1800block of Centre Street North and found the 66-year-oldwoman with multiple traumatic injuries, including head trauma,according to paramedics.

She was taken to Foothills hospital, where she later died.

Police said the driver was travelling southbound along Centre Street in a 1989 Ford Crown Victoriaat about 6:40 p.m.on Monday when he struck the woman as she attempted to cross the road.

Police determined the crossing lights were working properly and the victim was crossing in the crosswalk.

The driver remained at the scene and has been co-operative with investigators.

Police don't believe speed or alcohol to be factorsin this collision.

Previous pedestrian deaths

This marks the third time a pedestrian has been killed on Centre Street North in the past two years.

Last July, 33-year-oldFarida Abdurahmanwas struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver as she crossed the street in a crosswalknear43rd Avenue.

And in February 2014, 26-year-oldMoises Moraleswas killed on Centre Street North near 40th Avenue, also by a hit-and-run driver.

The woman's death is the first pedestrian fatality in Calgary of 2016.

There were seven pedestrians killed on city streets last year, according to police, and seven killed in 2014.

A total of 10 pedestrians were killed in 2013, the same total as 2012.

In 2014, the last full year for which police could provide data, there were 456 collisions on city streets resulting in injured pedestrians.

On Tuesday, two pedestrians were hit but both were conscious and breathing when emergency crews arrived.

One pedestrian was hit in Palliser in the city's southwest, while the other was involved in a hit-and-run in Dalhousie in the city's northwest.
