Woman hit by vehicle in Forest Lawn dies, boy hit in Cranston fights for life

A woman hasdied after being hit by a minivanin Forest Lawn, police say, hours after another crash left ayoung boy in critical condition in the city's southeast community of Cranston.

The 67-year-oldwoman was struck at about 10:15 p.m. Thursday as she was crossing at the intersection of 47th Street and Eighth Avenue S.E.

The driver remained at the scene to be interviewed by police.

Investigators believe she hadwalked south across EighthAvenue from the northwest corner of 47th Street, when she was hit by a Chrysler Pacificaheadingeast on EighthAvenue.

"It's not believed the overhead pedestrian crossing lights were activated at the time of the collision, and it's still unknown if the victim was inside or near the crosswalk," police said in a release.

She diedfrom her injuriesin hospital onFriday morning.

Boy hit earlier remains in critical condition

About five hours earlier, an eight-year-old boy was hit by a pickup truck near the intersection of Cranford Drive and Cranston Gate S.E.

Two children were crossing "in the vicinity" of an unmarked crosswalk when the boy was hit by a Nissan Frontier heading north on Cranford Drive.

The boy was first taken to the nearby South Health Campus with severe head and brain injuries. He was later airlifted to theAlberta Children's Hospital,where he remains incritical condition, police say.

The 27-year-old driver of the truck tried to brake, but was unable to stop in time, police said.

She remained at thescene and was interviewed by police.

Neither speed nor alcohol seem to have been a factor in either collision and charges are unlikely to be laid in either incident, a police spokesperson said.
