The former voice of the Calgary Flames was honoured before Tuesday nights game against Anaheim.

For 33 years, Peter Maher called the teams greatest moments. He retired last season after calling 2,954 Flames games.

The play-by-play announcer was known for his signature call "Yeah Baby" and "You can put it in the win column.

On Tuesday night, it was his turn to be in the spotlight.

"I've never been this nervous. I mean I was nervous before every broadcast, hockey, but never as nervous as I was tonight, he said.

The team has named an award after Maher, to be presented annually to the Flames player that best demonstrates the virtues of Peter Maher: Sincerity, integrity, dedication and respect, the plaque says.

I thought it was very nice thing for the media folk here to have an award for the Flame player that, you know, is a nice guy, Maher said.

There's a lot of nice guys on the team but to honour one each year is good. So now that they've named it after me it, you know, to me is something that I'll have and something I will carry with pride.

The Flames beat the Ducks 4-3 in a shootout.
