Calgary police officer accused of domestic abuse in off-duty incident

A Calgary police officer has been chargedfollowing what was described as an off-duty domestic incident in an unidentified municipality outside Calgary.

A Calgary police officer has been chargedfollowing what was described as an off-duty domestic incident outside of the city.

RCMP in an unidentified municipality neighbouringCalgary arrested the officer on Saturday and charged him withassault, assault by choking and forcible confinement.

"Given the domestic nature of this incident, the name of the officer will not be released to protect the privacy of those impacted," the Calgary Police Service said in a release.

CPS added it was not naming the municipality where the officer was arrested.

The accused officerhas been with the service for nine years, and police said he will remain on administrative duties at this time.

"Information about this incident and charges are being released in the interests of public transparency. The charged officer is afforded the right to a fair trial, the same as any member of the public," police said in the release.

"They will be offered the appropriate supports from the service during the court process."
