Watchdog investigating police shooting in northwest Calgary

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating an incident that saw a man shot by police last week in northwest Calgary.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT)is investigating afterpolice shot a manlast week in northwest Calgary.

The incident began at about 4 a.m. on Wednesday in the 200 block of Hendon Drive in the community of Highwood.

Officers were called to the scene for reports that a "giant truck" had hit a caller's home and her parked vehicle, ASIRT said in a release.

ASIRT said that a CPS officer approached the truck, and that the individual inside pointed an item resembling a handgun at the officer. The officer fired his gun at the driver, striking him in the chest.

The driver tried to leave the scene in the truck but was unsuccessful, ASIRT said, and after around an hour and a half the driver exited the truck and was arrested. Hewas taken to hospital in stable condition.

No police officers were hurt.

ASIRT said it would examine the use of force by the officer, but didn't offer any other information.
