Police warn about house party crashers after fatal stabbing

Calgary police are advising the public to call authorities if they want unwanted party guests removed from their home after athird-yearuniversity student was killed over the weekend.

Police are also warning against putting party plans on sites like Facebook.

Brett Wiese, a 20-year-old business student at the University of Calgary, died from his injuries after being stabbed early Saturday morning at a house party in the city's northwest. A second person was also seriously hurt.

Police say five strangers showed up after learning about the Brentwood-area party on a social media site.

Investigators say the uninvited people left, but nine people came back later and someof them had knives.

Mitchell William Harkes, 19, of Calgary is charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault and four breaches of various court orders. A 17-year-old young offender,who cannot be named,has also been charged with second-degree murder.

"It's best not to try to remove them yourself, but contact the police. Have them attend and they'll assist the hosts of the party to remove any unwanted guests," said Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus.

Brett Wieses mother, Brenda, says the family is not focusing on the two people charged, but on the loss of their son.

"We're not sitting in anger and judgment and we're not wasting our time on those people," she said. "Right now we have a son to love and a community who wants to be here with us."

Some University of Calgary studentsagree house parties can get out of hand.

"I don't really attend house parties too much just because Im afraid of something happening and when too many people are there it can get crazy and dangerous," Stacey Cameron said.

19-year-old appears in court

The19-year-old chargedin Wiese's deathappeared in court Tuesday.

Harkes appeared briefly by closed circuit television from the Calgary Remand Centre, buthas yet to find a lawyer, so his case was adjourned.

Hedid not address the courtroom.

Harkes case will return to court next week.
