Probe into Calgary pathologist's files raised no concerns

A recently concluded Calgary Policeinvestigation found no problems with files handled by former Calgary medical examiner Dr. Michael Belenky, CBC News has learned.

The probe started earlier this year after investigators raised concerns about an autopsy report prepared by Belenky for a criminal case.

More than 100 cases were double-checked during the three-month review, including homicides, arsons and automobile fatalities.

A second probe by Alberta Justice is still underway although a department spokeswoman said officials don't expect any of the cases handled by Belenky to be impacted.

Belenky joined the Calgary medical examiner's office in 2008. He left his position in January. Alberta Justice would not say what led to his departure, calling it a private human resources issue.

Belenky was not a board-certified pathologist, although that designationwhile desirable was not required for the position with the medical examiner's office.

CBC News was unable to reach Belenky for comment.
