Gunfire exchange leads to charges for Canmore, Alta., man: RCMP

A 27-year-old man has been charged with two offences following a shootout with a Banff RCMP officer in Canmore on Friday night.

A Canmore, Alta., resident has been charged following an officer-involved shooting in the mountain town.

On Friday nightat around 11:15 p.m. police said a 27-year-old man exchanged gunfire witha Banff RCMPofficer during a traffic stop.

In an updated release sentSunday afternoon, RCMP said the man was charged with two offences: discharge a firearm with intent and aggravated assault of a peace officer.

Police said that after the altercation this weekend, thesuspect fled in his vehicle and then on foot into a wooded area.He was located a short time later and then airliftedto a Calgary hospital with serious injuriesafter he was shot by the officer.

The man wasremanded into custody and will be appearing in Canmore Provincial Court. RCMP said the investigation is ongoing and further charges may be laid and areencouraging area residents to report any property damage that may have occurred as a result of this incident.

No officers were injured, police say.The Alberta Serious Incident Response Teamis now investigating.
