Good deed rewarded with assault and carjacking in Red Deer, say police

A Good Samaritan who offered a ride to two people claiming to be late for work was assaulted and robbed by his passengers Sunday morning in Red Deer, Alta., according to police.

On Sunday, Red Deer RCMP say two suspectsapproached a man in the parking lot of Johnstone Plaza on 67th Street around 7 a.m.

After a friendly conversation, police say the suspects asked the man for ride.

The three got into the man's van. After a few blocks, the victim let the passengers out in the area of 67thStreet and 67th Avenue, where thesuspects assaulted the man with a baton or pry bar and stole his wallet, cellphone and van.

The victim suffered a hard blow to the head and other injuries to his face.

The suspects

One of the suspects had a large knife, but did not use it during the assault, police say.

Police are on the hunt for the two suspects:

• First suspect is described as a white man with short brown hair and a slim build. He is between 20 and 25 years old, suffers from acne and has a noticeable scar on the left side of his nose. He was last seen wearing a black hat with black sunglasses on the brim, a grey hoodie, jeans and white shoes.
• The second suspect is described as an Aboriginal man, between 25 and 30 years old, with short dark hair and a tattoo on his left cheek. He was last seen wearing a dark hoodie, dark pants and red shoes.

The victim's van has not yet been recovered. Police say the van is a light brown 1997 Safari van with the Alberta license plate BWW 5421.
