Scrap heap fire sparks 17 charges for Ogden metal recycler

An Ogden recycling plant is facing 17 charges under the provincial fire and safety codes act after a fire at the end ofApril smouldered for two weeks.

A heap of scrap auto-parts, rubber and plasticsalso known as "auto fluff" had been slowly burning at the businesslocated onthe 3400 block of Ogden Road S.E.

Calgary Metal Recycling and its owner are facing the charges for failing to clear space between storage piles and the building and failing to ensure storage pile heightswere consistentwith safety codes.

The maximum fine for each count is $15,000.

There were no injuries and air quality remained acceptablewhile the fire continued tosmoulder, according to officials at the time.

The company's first court appearance is set for Sept. 5^.

Charges:

• Four counts of failing to ensure storage pile heights conform with the Alberta Fire Code.
• Four counts of failing to ensure the storage pile sizes conform with the Alberta Fire Code.
• Seven counts of failing to provide clear space between storage piles and buildings in compliance with the Alberta Fire Code.
• Two counts of failing to provide an access route for fire department vehicles in compliance with the Alberta Fire Code.
