Selamawit Alem's friends fundraise for her funeral, sister's flight

With no family in town, Selamawit Alem's friends have stepped in to raise funds for her funeral and sister's flight from East Africa.

Goal is to raise $18,000

Friends of one of Calgary's most recent homicide victims are looking to the public for help in covering the costs of aplane trip from East Africa and funeral expensesthrough a gofundme.com site.

Selamawit Alem, 54, was killedearlier in Octoberalong with one of her clients, 25-year-old Julie Tran.

Alem was a professional caregiver wholookedafter people with disabilities in her home.

"Selama was a kind, beautiful soul and had a passion for music," reads part of the gofundme.com site.

Alem's son was murdered a decade ago and she has survived two bouts of cancer.

With no immediate family in Canada, her friends decided to takecare of her funeraland the reconditioning of her home.

An $8,400 donation from the Eritrean Community has the group nearly to the halfway point of its $18,000 goal.
