Semi-truck collision with train sends man to hospital with serious injuries

The driver of a semi-truck that collided with a train in southeast Calgary on Monday afternoon has been taken to hospital with serious injuries to his legs.

The driver of a semi-truck that collided with a train in southeast Calgary on Monday afternoon has been taken to hospital with serious injuries to his legs.

The man had to be extricated by firefighters after the crash at 54th Avenueand 30th Street S.E.around 1:45 p.m. MT.

Firefighters used specialized extraction toolslikeairbags and cutters to free his legs, which had become trapped.

"Time is always of the essence especiallywhen you have severe injuries," said Carole Henke with the Calgary Fire Department.

The injured driver was conscious and breathing throughout the process, Henke said.

There was no concern about hazardousmaterials, as the train was carrying lumber, according to the fire department.

Calgary police are also on scene investigating what led to collision.The driver was taken to hospital and is listed in serious condition.
