Shaw to rebuild, expand in downtown Calgary

Shaw Communications says it will be back in its downtown Calgary location by the spring of 2014 after it was closed because of an explosion and fire last July.

Shaw Communications saysrenovations in its downtown Calgarylocation should be completeby the spring of 2014 after it was closedbecause of an electrical fire last July.

Shaw is also expanding to include 12 floors intwotowers that will be constructed across the street. The newbuildingisexpected to be completed by 2016.

"Shaw's commitment to rebuilding and expanding its corporate headquarters downtown will be a lasting contribution to a vibrant city centre," said Mayor Naheed Nenshi in a release.

"This project will be an important part of the downtown core and Calgary's economy."

Last year's firein an electrical room on the 13th floor activated the sprinkler system, resulting in water damage throughout the building andaffecting telecommunication services in the city.

More than 900 employees were forced out of Shaw Court, locatedon Third Avenue S.W., while the renovationsare completed.
