Moose tranquilized in south Calgary after going for a trot near Canadian Tire

Fish and Wildlife officers subdued a moose in south Calgary Wednesday morning after it trotted around a retail area and eventually wound up cornered in a small wooded area.

Adult female will be relocated to Kananaskis Country by Fish and Wildlife officers

A moose stumbles and falls down after being struck by a tranquilizer dart in the south Calgary community of Shawnessy. Alberta Fish and Wildlife officers relocated the animal to Kananaskis Country.

Fish and Wildlife officers subdued a moose in south Calgary Wednesday morningafter it trotted around a retail area and eventually wound up cornered in a small wooded area.

The animal was tranquilizednear a parking lot at the southwestcorner of ShawnessyBoulevardand Macleod Trail after going for a little wander near a Canadian Tire store around7 a.m.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife officers responded to the area after being contacted by Calgary police and managed to subdue the animal by roughly 9 a.m. a little further to the north, near Superstore.

"The moose was in good shape; she was relaxed. But, due to her location, we decided to immobilize her," said Phil Marasco with Alberta Fish and Wildlife.

An officer fired a single tranquilizer dart into the 250-kilogram animaland she went down within five minutes, Marasco said.

The animal was then loaded into a truck for relocation to Kananaskis Country.

Marasco said the moose likely made its way into the developed area via Fish Creek Park.
