Police are investigating a fatal shooting in Forest Lawn in southeast Calgary.

Officers were called to 17th Avenue and 43rd Street S.E. at about 5 a.m. on Friday for reports of a shooting, the Calgary Police Service said in a release.

A man found suffering from apparent gunshot wounds was taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries.

On Friday afternoon, Calgary police identified the victim as 44-year-old Jeremy BurtonJimmy. Police said the shooting is not believed to be random.

"This investigation remains in the early stages, and we are looking to speak with all potential witnesses or anyone who may have had recent contact with Jeremy," said Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson, with the homicide unit, in a statement.

"Even something that may seem insignificant can be instrumental in helping us advance this investigation."

A section of 17th Avenue between 42nd Street and 44th Street S.E. was closed Friday morning while police investigated.

Anyone with information about the shooting, including dashcam footage, is asked to call police at 403-266-1234 or contact Crime Stoppers.

The homicide is Calgary's ninth of the year.
