Crowchild Trail sinkhole to cause afternoon commute delays despite work to open more lanes

The city says it is working to have more southbound lanes of Crowchild Trail south of 26th Avenue S.W. open for the Friday afternoon commute after a sinkhole forced crews to reduce traffic to one lane during the morning rush.

The city says it is working tohave two out of three southbound lanes of Crowchild Trail in southwest Calgary open for the Friday afternoon commute after a sinkhole forced crews to reduce traffic to one lane during the morning rush.

Two of the southbound lanes on Crowchild Trail south of the26th Avenue S.W. overpass wereclosedlate Thursdaybecause of a sinkhole that's forming in the road, city officials say.

Motorists should still try to avoid the area andexpect major traffic delays if they are travelling on that route, the city tweeted Friday afternoon.

There's no word on when the problem will be fixed and all the lanes reopened.

City crews are still trying to determine what to do about what they are calling a sink depressionat the Crowfoot LRT parking lot that emerged earlier this week.

Three vehicles that had to be leftin the lot when crews cordoned off the indentationwere safely removed on Thursday.

There is still no word on when crewswill be excavating the surface, but a city spokespersonsaid it could be as early as next week.

A sinkhole on Crowchild Trail prompted officials to close two southbound lanes south of the 26th Avenue S.W. overpass. The city's traffic camera at 33rd Avenue shows traffic moving slowly from the north early Friday morning. (City of Calgary)
