Speedcubing record breaker just wanted to beat his brother

Antoine Cantin has been solving Rubik's Cubes for about seven years now.

"My older brother actually learned how to solve it," Cantin said, of his introduction to speedcubing.

"At first I wasn't interested at all but he was my older brother and he was getting kind of good at it and I wanted to be better than him so I practiced a lot to beat him."

A huge speedcubing tournament drew hundreds to the Cedarbrae Community Centre in Calgary on Saturday.

Cantin, who is from Ontario, says his interest in Rubik's Cubes built over time.

"I was able to go to competitions and from then on I just got captivated by the community and I just continued solving and practicing. I started getting records and then I wanted to beat my records and then I wanted to beat other people's records," he said.

Cantin has broken world records in speedcubing.

The competitions, organized by canadianCUBING, run in cities across Canada year round.
