"Precipitation will likely begin as rainbut will transition to snow this afternoon in Kananaskis and tonight in the Pincher Creek and Cardston regions," reads the warning from Environment Canada issued Wednesday.

"Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow."

Areas around Cypress Hills, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat face the prospect of rain turning to wet snow that could fall as deep as 20 cm.

"The heaviest snow will fall through the day Thursday where five to 10 cm is expected," said Environment Canada.

"This snow will be very heavy and may break tree branches if left to accumulate. Take care when shoveling heavy wet snow. Poor travel conditions are expected Thursday into Friday."

The warnings don't include the Calgary area, but the forecast for the city is a 60 per cent chance of flurries near midnight and periods of snow on Thursday. Accumulations of 2-4 cm are expected.
