Springbank air show leads to traffic jam on Trans-Canada Highway

Another huge crowd headed out ofCalgary Sunday for an airshowwest of the city.

Wings Over Springbank caused a major traffic backup along the Trans-Canada Highway on both Saturday and Sunday mornings.

But people who came out for Saturday's showsaid the slow trip out was worth it.

"Watching the fighter jet go really high and coming down really close to the ground and then pulling up," said Salas See.

It's the first airshow at the Springbank airport in about 20 years.

The airshow was moved from Airdrie because the new Calgary runway caused air traffic concerns.

But construction on 16th Avenue near Canada Olympic Park,combined with thousands of plane enthusiasts heading west, createdtraffic jams that stretched for several kilometres.

There was a lotto see once people got there,including Sentimental Journey a fully operational B-17 bomber.

Other highlights included spiffy executive jets, and even gliders. But the real show is up in the sky perfectly framed by the Rocky Mountains.

The Canadian military also play a big part with the world-famous Canadian Forces Snowbirds and the SkyHawks, the forces' parachute squad.

"Most military activities by their nature are somewhat secluded and we keep to ourselves. But this way the public can get to see a choreographed display of our operational capabilities and we get to meet people all across this fine nation of ours," said Cpt. Jake Porter.

Wings Over Springbank runs Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
