Advisory issued for Old Man River

The rain has prompted a high stream flow advisory for southwestern Alberta, although flooding is not expected.

The rain has prompted a high stream flow advisory for southwestern Alberta, although flooding is not expected.

Residents near the Old Man River basin are warned of rising water levels. As well, stream levels in Lee Creek, Pincher Creek, Drywood Creek and Waterton River are on the rise.

The advisory is a precautionary measure, said Carrie Sancartier, a spokeswoman for Environment Canada.

"Water levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly because of precipitation in the area. We're not expecting any major flooding at this point, but there could be flooding in low lying areas because of the rain. And it's my understanding that the rain is expected to continue for another couple of days so there could be the possibility of expanding the current advisory to additional areas."

A high stream flow advisory is simply the first level of alert. A flood stream watch is next and then a flood warning, ifrivers are expected to rise over the top of the banks.
