The Uptown theatre in downtown Calgary is shutting down.

Managers say the increased popularity of internet services such as Netflix, as well as an increase in movie piracy, are making it tough for cinemas which specialize in art house movies.

The theatre was built in 1951 and operated as such until 1988 in the historical Barron Building on eighthavenue S.W.

Since it changed ownership in 1992, the venue has showcased various films, music, dance and live theatre.

In a written statement released on Wednesday, the operators thank Calgarians, staff and performers for their years of support.

They add, the management team remains committed to supporting the Arts in Calgary.
