Alleged cancer scam artist recovering from jail assault

A Calgary man is recovering from being assaulted while being held in jail on fraud charges. It is alleged he faked having cancer to obtain money.

Calgary man accused of faking cancer to raise money

A Calgary man who is accused offaking brain cancer to raise moneyis recovering in a Calgary hospital froma jailhouse beating.

Kristopher Cook is being held in the Calgary Remand Centreon two counts of fraud.

Cooks lawyer, Joel Chevrefils said his client was attacked by other prisoners shortly after arriving at the remand centre earlier this week.

"All we know is that his door to his cell opened and a bunch of people charged in and assaulted him. He doesnt know who they are. Again we can guess what their motivations are but we dont know at this point," said Chevrefils on Friday.

According to Chevrefils his client received a concussion, a broken nose, black eyes and a bruised spleen.

Cooks bail hearing has been postponed because of the assault.

Cheverfils is trying to have Cook held in protective custody when his client is sent back to the remand centre.
