Five teens have been charged in connection to a swarming incident in Lethbridge that left a 16-year-old boy in the hospital with stab wounds.

Lethbridge police were called to an alley late Thursday night after a bystander heard a commotion and saw people running away, police said in a release Monday.

The bystander then found the 16-year-old suffering serious stab wounds.

He was taken to hospital in Lethbridge and later transferred to Calgary, where he remains in stable condition.

Investigators quickly identified an 18-year-old female as a person of interest and obtained video surveillance of the assault.

The victim was punched, kicked and stabbed multiple times before the culprits fled, according to police.

On Friday, police carried out a search warrant at a suspect's home and found evidence, including the knife believed to have been used in the attack. Police also recovered a stolen vehicle.
