A Calgary woman who was reported missing more than five years ago is now believed to have been the victim of a homicide, police say.

Tammie Doreen Howard who also went by the name Irish was last heard from on Dec. 24, 2016. Her family reported her as missing in April 2017.

She was 49 when she disappeared.

Calgary Police Service Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta says investigators initially believed it was a missing person case but have followed many leads and determined Howard was killed.

Schiavetta says some cases are solved within hours or days but others, like this one, can take a lot longer.

He says police will continue to work the case so Howard's family gets answers.

Investigators believe a light-coloured Jeep Wrangler was connected to Howard's death. They released a stock photo of one as they seek tips from the public.

Anyone with information about Howard's disappearance or about the Jeep Wrangler is asked to call police at 403-266-1234 or to contact Crime Stoppersanonymously.
