TransCanada begins new round of layoffs but won't give total

TransCanadabegan a new round of layoffs today but is not yet saying publicly how many peopleare affected.

"I can confirm that workforce adjustment notifications are being made today," company spokesmanMark Cooper told CBC News in an email.

"Until the process is complete, we are unable to provide detail on employee or contractor reductions."

"These changes align with changes that we're making to our structure to remain competitive and deliver shareholder value, as well as in response to falling oil prices and its effect on our customers,"Cooper said.

"These two factors mean that we need to drive down costs and pursue our projects more efficiently and strategically. This includes having to make some difficult decisions that affect our workforce."Cooper said specifics on thecuts willcome later.

"Our aim is to be fair and respectful in this process. We are committed to ensuring that all employees have the opportunity to hear information from their leaders first," he said.
