Donations were up at the annual 'Stuff a Truck' campaign for the Veterans Food Bank on the weekend, despite the downturn in the economy.

Volunteers say they received about 30 per cent more non-perishable foods this year than last.

Navy veteran Jim Welsh says it's important to have a veteran-specific food bank.

"Specifically the younger veterans, [they] won't come and ask, and they definitely won't go stand in line at the Calgary Food Bank because they're just a little too proud," he said.

The group also received more than $5,000 in cash donations about 25 per cent more than last year.

"This city, more than any other city I've lived in in this country, is very generous, very generous. We've had people come up with full shopping carts, full shopping carts, and just leave them. It's amazing."
