Victoria Day in Calgary: What's open, what's closed and how to get around

True to tradition, the weather on the May long weekend here in Calgary hasn't been ideal. Still, there's plenty to do, and if you want to make the most of it, here's what you need to know.

Special transit, parking, and community centre hours in effect this May long weekend

True to tradition, the weather on theMay long weekend here in Calgary hasn't been ideal.

Still, there's plenty to do, and ifyou want to make the most of it, here's what you need to know.

Transit closures and free parking

Beginning around 7:30 p.m. Friday throughMonday,TheC-TrainRed Line will be closed between the CityHall and Chinook stations, and the Blue Line will be closed betweenBridgelandandCityHall.

Shuttle buses will replaceC-Trainservice between these stations.

On-street parking isfreeandholiday rates willbein effect Monday atselectCalgaryParking Authoritysurface lotsandparkades.

What to do

CalawayParkkicks off its35thseasonoffamily funthis Saturday with rides, live entertainment and tasty treats. The amusement park was forced to close on Monday, however, due to high winds and rain.

Take a step back in time and enjoy a free pancake breakfast (first 500 guests inGunn'sDairy barn before11 a.m.) atHeritage Park, or head to the mountains where theBanff Centre Children's Festivalwill offer plentyoffree activities onSaturday.

Community centre closures

Thesefacilities will beclosed onMonday:

BothSouthlandandVillage Squareare open from11 a.m. to 5 p.m.Monday with regular admission rates in effect.

Spring cleaning opportunities

All three city-operated landfillswill beopen from7:30 a.m. to5p.m.on Monday.

The city'sannualSpring Yard Wasteprogram runs throughMay 29. Drop off your leaves, branches, plants and other yard waste for free at any citylandfill and pick up somefree mulchfor your garden while you're there.

More than 100 community cleanups will take place from now through September.

Fire and flood safety

Afire safety advisoryremainsin effect forCalgary. Becautious when using outdoor open flames.

That includesbarbecuesandbackyard fire pits, and when disposingofsmoking materials.

The riskofriver flooding inCalgaryis greatest betweenMay 15 and July 15each year.
