Wind gusts up to 110 km/h expected across southwestern Alberta

People in southwestern Alberta can expect to be buffeted by extremely high winds again on Friday.

Environment Canada issued wind alerts for areas around Nordegg, Kananaskis, Okotoks, Crowsnest Pass and Cardston on Friday, warning that there could be gusts up to 110 km/h in some locations.

On Thursday, the wind was clocked at 167km/h north of Waterton Park Gate on Highway 6, while wind speeds of 154 km/hwere recorded onHighway 22 north of Lundbreck.

Sue Keenan is with the town of Fort Macleod, where winds reached130 km/h.

"We had a roof come off of one of our motels on Main Street. So we scrambled to attend to that. And trees down,some power lines down," she said.

"Everybody was at the ready and we were stretched in terms of our manpower, but we made it through the day, so there's some positives in that."

Keenan says people in her area are used to the wind but this was different.

"It was an anomaly, really.The winds were going in all different directions," she said.

Southern Alberta RCMP are advising against unnecessary travel on Highway 22 between Highway 3 and Longview because of the continuing strong winds in the area.

"Commercial vehicles are advised against all travel along the Highway 22 corridor until the wind speeds diminish," RCMP said.

Banff and Jasper national parks are still under snowfall warningswith additional accumulations of 5 to 10 centimetres expected.
