Woman dragged and killed by garbage truck in northeast Calgary parking lot

A woman was hit and killed by a garbage truck early Friday morning in northeast Calgary, according to police.

A woman was hit and killed by a garbage truck early Friday morning in northeast Calgary, according to police.

Officers were called to a parking lot at 2980 26th St. N.E.for reports of a pedestrian collision ina commercial area, just offBarlowTrail.

Acting Sgt.Rob Lewis with the Calgary Police Service said the incident happened in the parking lot of Cruise Canada RV, a recreational vehiclesales and rental company.

"She was somehow in the parking lot when the collision occurred," Lewis said. "It's still under investigation as to why she was in the parking lot."

Police said a woman was struck by the right rear side of the reversing garbage truck and dragged a short distance. She was then run over as the truck moved forward. (CBC)

Police said the 58-year-old driver of the garbage truck was picking up waste from a large garbage bin when the woman was hit by the reversing vehicle.

The woman was struck by the right rear side of the garbage truck and dragged a short distance. Police saidthewoman was then run overas the truck moved forward.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lewis said the woman was notemployed by eitherCruise Canada RV or the garbage collection company.

The only witness to the incident was the driver of the garbage truck, and investigators have no surveillance camera recordings of the collision, policesaid.
