A painting by a young Calgary woman is now on display at the National Gallery of Canada.

Anna Weyant, 19, is a graduate of Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School. She entered a contest put on by the National Gallery of Canada called So you want to be an artist.

The contest attracted entries from 117 young Canadians between the age of 16 and 19.Weyant didnt get enough votes to make the finals, but her portrait was chosen for the top three on the basis of merit.

Weyant painted it during her first year at the Rhode Island School of Design. Its a portrait of her friend Isabelle.

[Isabelle]was painting her own portrait and I was painting my own. I got so frustrated with it. And so I sat down next to her and painted her.

Weyants painting, which placed third, will be in the gallery for the rest of the summer, along with 14 other toppaintings. She wont get a chance to see it, but her father plans to visit the gallery while heis on a business trip to Ottawa.

Kevin Nguyen of Toronto placed first and FrederikGiguere of Sherbrooke, Que., placed second.
