A daylight stabbing in downtown Edmonton sent a 30-year-old man to hospital where he is in stable condition, police say.

The incident, which police described as a swarming, started Friday just before 5:30 p.m. outside a coffee shop near the Stanley A. Milner Library at 100th Street near 102nd Avenue.

"The information we received was just 10 to 15 persons attacking one person, that was wearing military garb or military clothing, which fits that of what the victim was wearing," said Sgt. Gary Willits of the Edmonton Police Service.

"The preliminary information we have is that the combatants were unknown to each other."

When police arrived, the members of the group split up and fled, Willits said.

Two suspects are in custody but no charges have yet been laid.
