2 pedestrians die on Edmonton streets

Two people have died on Edmonton streets in two crashes 12 hours apart.

Two people have died on Edmonton streets in two crashesless than 12 hours apart.

A 71-year-old man crossing66th Street was hit by a vehicle Wednesday night at 10:15near 31st Avenue.

On Thursday, a6-year-old girl and her great-grandmother,66, were hit at 128th Street and 122nd Avenue around 8:20 a.m. while they werewalkingtoSt. Pius X School.

Both victims were taken to hospital where the woman died. The girl's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

"No students or families witnessed the incident," said Edmonton Catholic Schools spokeswoman Lori Nagy.

"It happened so quickly and of course some students did run into the school and say that they neededan ambulance, but luckily no one witnessed the actual incident."

Police don't believespeed or alcoholwere factors, butsay the drivermay havebeenblinded by the sun. There is no marked crosswalk in the area.

Nocharges have been laid so far in either incident.

The deaths are the second and third pedestrian fatalitiesof 2011 in Edmonton.
