Alberta man dies in 3rd RCMP shooting this month

A man shot and killed by RCMP officers on the Cold Lake First Nation on Thursday was wanted in connection with sexual assaults, a police spokesman said.

A man shot and killed by RCMP officers on the Cold Lake First Nation on Thursday was wanted in connection with sexual assaults, a spokesman with the Alberta Serious Response Team said.

A number of uniformed and plainclothes officers were sent to the reserve northeast of Edmonton toserve thearrest warrant on the suspect, 52, whose identity has not been made public, ASIRT spokeswoman Sarah Jackson said Friday.

ASIRT isan independent body that investigates injuries or deaths that may relate to the actions of a police officer.

Themanwas shot duringan altercation, RCMP said earlier in the day. He wastaken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"There was a confrontation ASIRT spokeswoman Sarah Jackson said. "During the confrontation with the male, one RCMP officer fired his service weapon, striking the male. ASIRT investigators have recovered a knife from the scene of the incident."

Alberta RCMP officers were involved in two other fatal incidents earlier this month:

Ina fourth incident, ASIRT was called in to investigate after aman suspected of impaired driving wasshotseveral times by RCMP officersin Grande Cache. The driver, Curtis Hallock, is known forhis role on the Canadian reality TV show Mantracker.
