Alberta reports 143 new cases of COVID-19, no additional deaths

Alberta now has 1,910 active cases of COVID-19, and 1,085 of them are in the Edmonton zone.

Alberta now has 1,910 active cases of COVID-19, after 143new cases were reportedWednesday.

There were no additional deaths, leaving the total at 281.

Of the66people in hospital, five more than on Tuesday, 13 are in intensive care.

Provincial labs completed13,610tests for COVID-19 on Tuesday, bringing the total number of completed tests to1,456,219.

Edmonton zone case numbers continue to rise, hitting 1,085. Edmonton zone case numbers topped 1,000 for the first time on Tuesday.

Health Minister Tyler Shandrospoke Wednesday withDr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's chief medical officer of health, about Edmonton's surging numbers.

"We are going to have increased voluntary measures that we're going to be recommending for folks in the Edmonton zone," Shandrosaid.

The new measureswill be announced Thursday when Hinshaw hostshernext news conference.

The largest current outbreak is in the Edmonton zone, where48 active cases (58 total)are tied to an outbreak atMillwoods Shepherd's Care Centre.

The regional breakdown of active cases was:

  • Edmonton zone: 1,085cases, up from 1,063cases Tuesday.
  • Calgary zone: 620 cases, downfrom 645 cases.
  • North zone: 90 cases, down from 99 cases.
  • South zone: 78 cases, up from 61cases.
  • Central zone: 30 cases, up from 26cases.
  • Unknown: seven cases, up from sixcases.

There are now 14schools on theprovince's watch list, meaning they have five or more cases, almost all in the cities of Edmonton, which has nine, orCalgary, which has four.

There are 55 other schools across the province reportingtwo to four cases.
