Alberta to regulate naturopathic doctors

The Alberta government has announced the creation of the College of Naturopathic Doctors of Alberta to govern the profession.

Naturopathic doctors are going to be regulated in Alberta.

The provincial government has announced the creation of the College of Naturopathic Doctors of Alberta to govern the profession.

Naturopathic doctors promote healthy living and treat illness using natural therapies.

Health Minister Fred Horne says Albertans have shown an increased interest in alternative therapies and there need to be measures in place to ensure their safety.

He says the services still aren't covered by Alberta Health but can now be claimed as medical expenses through some employer-sponsored health plans and qualify for income tax deductions.

The college's first president, Allissa Gaul of Calgary, says there are 144 naturopathic doctors practising across the province
