Amarjeet Sohi confirmed winner after Edmonton-Mill Woods election ballot recount

A judicial recount has confirmed Edmonton city Coun. Amarjeet Sohi won the riding of Edmonton-Mill Woods in the federal election.

On the night of the election, a down-to-the-wire race ended with Liberal candidate Sohi edging Conservative candidate Tim Uppal by just 80 votes.

A routine official verification process the next day knocked that number down to 79 votes.

Within four days, as is allowed under Canadian election laws, a judge granted arecount.

The results, announced at about 1 p.m. Thursday, declared Sohi the winner. And his victory margin actually widened: Elections Canada confirmed hewon by 92 votes.

"When you are in that uncertain situation there is a lot of anxiety and that is understandable," Sohi said about the reaction from supporters over the last few days.

He said he's looking forward to getting down to work. And he sees becoming a member of parliament as a continuation of his work as a city councillor.

Uppal's lawyer, Jonathan Denis, said his client believes the process was worth it for peace of mind.

"At the end of the day, Mr. Uppal simply wanted the voters in Edmonton-Mill Woods to be confident in the process and in the full outcome as to who may be the winner, regardless of who that is," Denis said.

Uppal was a cabinet minister in Stephen Harper's government. Now that he is officially leaving his post, he's weighing his career options.

"He told me this morning his first priority right now is to be a dad," Denis said.

There is one more step available for appeal, but Denis said Uppal wishes to "respect the results" of this recount.

Edmonton city council is set to discuss Sohi's official resignation from his councillor position on Nov. 3.
