Suspect killed in police shooting near Entwistle, west of Edmonton

A man shot by police Sunday night died at the scene, Alberta RCMP said in a news release Monday.

Update: A news release fromAlberta Serious Incident Response Team Wednesday said the 32-year-old man shot by RCMPSunday was wanted in a domestic aggravated assault. Police called the man on his phone during the pursuittode-escalatethe situation, but herefused to surrenderand made threats regarding the use of a .22-calibre rifle, ASIRT said. During the ensuingconfrontation, three officers fired at and struck the suspect.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating theshooting, whichhappened about 95kilometres west of Edmonton near the hamlet of Entwistle.

RCMPsaid in the release they were warnedat about 4:15 p.m. Sundayto be on the lookout for a suspect from Onion Lake, Sask.,who was wanted inan aggravatedassault andbelieved to armed.

Later that night,RCMPlearned from the suspect's cellphonedatahe maybe west of Edmonton. At 8:30 p.m., policelocatedthe suspect'svehicle heading west on Highway 16 and, after the driver failed to pull over,began a pursuit.

The vehicle was stopped using a spike belt on the highway near Range Road 73 when aconfrontation ledofficers to open fire, RCMP said. The mandied at the scene.

No officers were hurt, RCMPsaid.

The westbound lanes of Highway 16 wereclosed untilearly Monday.

More details will be releasedas the investigation progresses, ASIRT officials said.
