City is warning drivers to expect delays this summer

Edmonton drivers, take note: the city has 125 traffic projects planned for the coming summer.

Mayor Don Iveson announced the plans Thursday morning, officially kicking off the 2014 construction season.

While the projects range in size and impact, several are nearly guaranteed to cause traffic headaches, including the replacement of the 102nd Avenue bridge over Groat Road and closure of Walterdale Hill as construction continues on the newWalterdale Bridge.

Other projects include improvements and road work at:

  • 63rd Avenue from 99th Street to 104th Street
  • Calgary Trail SB from 63rd to 51st Avenue
  • Allendale Road EB from 99th to 104thStreet
  • Allendale Road EB from 104th to 106th Street
  • 112thAvenue from 50th to 60th Street
  • Guardian Road/Lewis Estates
  • the QEII/41st Avenue interchange

The total cost for all the planned street work is estimated around $404 million.

On April 15, city council voted to give an extra $27 million towards repairing arterial and neighbourhood roads in the city.

Iveson said the investment is the citys way of renewing its commitment to improving infrastructure.

"We just need to keep attacking those really, really bad areas as well as pursuing preventative maintenance strategy to make sure we get full life out of the investments we've made in newer roads," Ivesonsaid."So less and less patching of potholes and more and more preserving our initial investment in roads, and then properly investing in them when the time to replace them."

While the work is being done, city officials say drivers should plan on delays and detours.
