City of Edmonton and Oilers owners suing architects of Rogers Place

In a statement released by the two parties they state that a lawsuit was necessary to proceed with legal action on that date to protect the City and EAC's legal interests.

The two parties are seeking $4.8 million from the past and current architects of the arena

Within the context of a project in excess of $600 million, a claim in the amount of $4.8 million is in no way unusual, reads a statement provided by EAC and the City. (Ice District)

The City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Arena Corporation (EAC)are suingthe architects of Rogers Place.

EAC is owned by the Katz Group and is also the company that owns the Edmonton Oilers.

The statement of claim was filed by the city and EAC on May 6.

The two parties are seeking $4.8 million from 360 Architects Canada Inc, the original architects of the project, and HOK Architects Corporation, the architectswho took over the project.

A statement to CBC released by thecity and EAC did not specify details of what led to the lawsuit. But itstatesthat a lawsuit "was necessary to proceed with legal action on that date to protect the City and EAC's legal interests."

However, the partiessuggestthat something like this is not out of the ordinary.

"Within the context of a project in excess of $600 million, a claim in the amount of $4.8 million is in no way unusual," it read."As part of managing this project, the project team exercised the additional diligence of placing project insurance to cover this very kind of claim."

Construction on the project began in March of 2014.

The arena, combined with the four other components of the project the community rink, LRT connection, pedestrian pedway and Winter Garden has an estimated pricetag of$606.5 million.

The EAC and the city still anticipate Rogers Place to open in the fall.
