Driver speeds at 163 km/hr with kids in back seat

An Edmonton man faces a number of charges after he was caught speeding on Anthony Henday Drive going 63 kilometres an hour over the speed limit.

The man, 30, had two children in the backseat of his Hyundai car when he was stopped by police.. A 28-year-old woman was in the front passenger seat.

Police spotted the man while he was travelling southbound on the Henday on Oct. 26. He cut across two lanes of traffic and exited onto 87th Avenue. Police clocked him doing 163 km/hr in a 100 km/hr zone.

When police pursued the vehicle, they found it stopped at a red light beside a truck. Both vehicles were revving their engines in anticipation of a race, police say.

Police then pulled both vehicles over once the light turned green.

Const. Dean Schwaga said it was a shock to find an 8 and 9-year-old in the car.

Typically when you do have people speeding well in excess of the speed limit, more often than not the drivers alone or might have a friend, he said.

To have younger children in the car, I, myself, havent seen it often. So that was a bit of a unique twist in what we saw.

The driver of the Hyundai is charged with stunting, speeding 50 kilometres over the speed limit, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and causing a child to be in need of intervention.

The driver of the truck also faces charges.
