Edmonton almost ready for FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup

Organizers are putting the finishing touches on Edmonton's preparations for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup with its kick off only a few days away.

Organizers are putting the finishing touches on Edmonton's preparations for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup with its kick off only a few days away.

The U-20 tournament is traditionally held in the country that will host the main FIFA Women's World Cup which Canada will host in 2015.

"We're excited ourvolunteers are all decked out and ready to go," said Trisa Zimmerman, Commonwealth Stadium's general manager.

"This really is a chance for us to test our preparations, test out our volunteers, test out all of our systems and processes that are in place and make sure we're ready for next year when we do expect the bigger crowds and bigger attention from the world."

The stadium will host seven matches in this tournament taking place on Aug. 5 8, 13 and 16. The teams that will play at in Edmonton in the group stage are Germany, USA, China, Brazil, Paraguay, France, Nigeria and England.

Canada's first group stagematches are being held in Toronto and Montreal.

FC Edmonton goalkeeper John Smits said he's hoping the tournament helps to grow the popularity of the game.

"It's definitely great for the community, the fact that kids are seeing world class soccer being played in our home town," Smits said.

Zimmermansaid she expects there to be 3,000 to 5,000fans at the early matches, with a bigger crowd for the quarter final.
