A controversial development plan for the northeast corner of the city has been given the green light, disappointing farmers.

A controversial development plan for the northeast corner of the city has been given the green light, disappointing farmers.

"I had big hopes and visions for Edmonton's local food economy and it seems pretty clear to me that city council doesn't support market gardening in our city,"said Janelle Herbert.

The Horse Hill structure plan willdirect future growth for the area andhas split the community between those who want city services like roads and sewer and those who want farmland preserved.

The area structure plan was adopted by city councilWednesday night after two days of hearings.

Area resident Roy Powell washappythe plan is finally being put in place.

"Our family home has been in that area for 30-some years now and it's great to see that city council has the foresight to look at the way the city has to grow," he said.
