Edmonton eco stations flooded with electronics during holidays

This time of year Edmonton's four eco stations are familiar with the phrase, "Out with the old, in with the new."

People have dropped off hundreds of computers, monitors, TVs and toys at waste management facilities, says Michael Semeniuk, supervisor ofCoronation eco station in the northwest part of the city.

"We're getting probably twice as much electronics as we usually get every day. Pretty much every year is basically the same."

Semeniuk has seen an increase of newer products arriving during the holiday season. He says because new consumer products come out faster they are disposed of quicker.

"The turnover on iPhones is pretty quick," he said.

Many of those products end up at the reuse centres at the Kennedale (northeast) and Ambleside (southwest) eco stations. And they are free.

Semeniuk says better communication between the city and public is allowing people to make wiser choices when recycling.
