The Filipino community in Edmonton is raising funds to help family and friends in the Philippines who are dealing with the effects of both Typhoon Haiyan and the Oct.15 earthquake.

On Sunday, a dinner and silent auction raised funds for the victims of the earthquake, but organizers say they are planning events to help people hurt by the typhoon.

"It's very hard for us because some of our members they have family there that were affected directly by the typhoon, said Alex Aco, president of the Visayas-Mindanao Association of Edmonton

So we're just doing what we can do right now. Were doing it one step at a time."

Anna Hnatiuk is one of the Edmontonians worrying about the situation in the Philippines. She hasnt heard from her family since the storm hit.

"My nephew, my nieces, my sister, aunts and uncles, you know, my cousins. I don't know, she said.

Each dollar donated by Canadians to registered Canadian charities for the Philippines will be matched by the federal government.
