Edmonton launches hands-free driving app with safety alerts

A new hands-free driving app could save you from a collision, or from getting a ticket, the city says.

The Edmonton Smart Travel App gives drivers verbal warnings about school zones, speed-limitchanges,high-collision locations around the city, and even severe weather conditions and police enforcement campaigns.

The city said the app, which launched Monday, complies with distracted driving legislation because it works hands-free, so it can be used while driving.

The app sends push notifications to alert drivers of upcoming issues en route.

"A high-collision location warning may save you from a crash," Coun. Dave Loken said in a news release. The app also contributes to Edmonton's long-term goal of Vision Zero, which means zero traffic and serious injuries, Coun. Bev Esslinger said in the release.

But using the app doesn't mean drivers are no longer responsible for being alert and obeying posted speed limits, the city says.

The app is free and can be downloaded at edmonton.ca/SmartTravel, in the iTunesApp Store or on Google Play.
