An Edmonton man is now $30 million richer, and has his longtime lottery ticket-purchasing habit to thank for it.

Over the yearsMauro Bagnariol, a retired City of Edmonton worker, has made it a habit to regularly buy lottery tickets, going back in every few weeks to check if he won anything.

Following his usual routine, Bagnariolbought a ticket for the massive $60 million Nov. 6 Lotto Max at a 7-Eleven in northwest Edmonton, butwas not among the masses who rushed to check their tickets following the draw.

Instead, he waited a while.

"I went back to 7-Eleven a couple weeks later and checked my ticket," he said.

"I put it in the scanner and a bunch of zeros came up and I said 'Woah.'So I put it in again to see if there was a decimal point there somewhere and there wasn't. And it was $30 million dollars."

Bagnariol's ticket was one of two sold that matched all seven numbers. The other was purchased in Atlantic Canada.

As soon as he realized he had won,Bagnariol called his mother to tell her the good news.

Bagnariol was due in Calgary several days later to go to his grandson's birthday party. Not wanting to overshadow the event, he opted not to tell anyone else about his windfalluntil after the party.

Bagnariol saidhis first goal is tohelp his children pay off their mortgages.

"That's the most important thing for me, being able to help my family," he said.

He plans to invest the rest, but acknowledged things might have been different had he won earlier in his life.

"If I was 30 years younger, I'd go out andbuy a Ferrari."
