Edmonton Oilers to mark 30th anniversary of 1984 Stanley Cup win

Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and Paul Coffeywill be among the legendary Edmonton Oilersplayers reunited on Oct. 10 when the team hosts a celebration in honour of the 30th anniversary of the 1984 Stanley Cup victory.

TheOilersmade the announcement on Tuesday afternoonwith the help of Gretzky, who made an appearance viawebcast,

"We started talking about doing something very special," said Gretzky.

"A lot of players made a lot of great friendsin Edmonton over the years and maybe haven't seen peoplefor a long time. And just as important, being able to raisemoney for a greatcause. "

The team will host the 1984 Stanley Cup reunionat Rexall Place in support of the Stollery Children's Hospital.

Tickets for the special celebration will go on sale Friday Aug. 22 at 10 a.m., at a cost of $99 per seat.

The evening will see former Oilersswapping stories about theirtime in the city and with the 1984 team.

Kevin Lowe, the team's president of hockey operations, said it is fitting that proceeds from the evening will go towards the Stollery, pointing out that Oilers players have long had a history of supporting local causes.

"It was part of something you did in Edmonton. It didn't exist in other NHL cities ... you play with the Oilers, you associate with an organization of some type and you give your time," he said.

Both Lowe and Gretzky hope that the event will also serve to inspire a new generation of fans who were too young to watch the team thirty years ago.

"Hopefully, this will ... rub off a the new team in time for theirhome-opener, excite the fan and excite the players," said Gretzky.
