Edmonton seeing record levels of mosquitoes

The buzzing is going to get worse.

According to the Edmonton's mosquito control unitthe cityis seeing record levels of mosquitos this year.

"Going back through our records this is a tie for the earliest we have ever had summer species showing," said Mike Jenkins, a biological sciences technician.

Jenkins also said it's one of the latest they've seen the spring mosquito populations emerge.The summer species and the spring species usually don't hatch this close together.

The city blames a dry April on thedelayedhatching of the spring population.

Thearrivalofa hot and moist late May afterwardscreatedthe perfect conditions to hatch both the spring and summer mosquito swarms.

Jenkins said on average the city'straps capture about 40 mosquitos a week, which is a bit above average.

However, the all-time record was set in July of1982 whenthey collected about 111,000 mosquitoes per trap.
