Fatal Edmonton LRT beating prompts policy review demands

An Edmonton city councillor is calling for a review of LRT safety procedures after police were sent to a transit station two stops down the line while a passenger was being severely beaten on a northbound train.

"Any time you lose a life on transit or anywhere in the city it's a terrible thing so I think we've got to be looking at ways that this will never happen again," Coun. Kerry Diotte said.

John (Jonny) Hollar, 29, died on Sunday, two days after he was attacked. His family is furious police weren't directed to meet the train at Belvedere, the closest available stop.

Instead, Edmonton Transit toldpolice to go to Clareview, another three minutes away, on the belief that it was easiertomeet the train there because a freight train was tying up traffic near Belvedere station.

A suspect was arrested at the scene. A 29-year-old man is charged with second-degree murder
